Welcome to Block Island
Community Sailing!

Founded and run by long time Island sailing enthusiasts, BICS is dedicated to making the sport of sailing fun, available, and affordable to everyone.

BICS is a member based organization, open to everyone, with a low annual membership fee, which will allow members the unlimited use of our boats, along with member discounts for sailing lessons, and US Sailing certification courses for boating safety, keel boat sailing, coastal navigation, and race committee member certification. BICS promotes sailing with low cost programs to enable prospective sailors to experience the joy and excitement of the sport and more experienced sailors to sharpen their skills and receive certification of their sailing proficiency leading to the award of a US Sailing “International Proficiency Certificate” which is your passport to leasing a bareboat charter anywhere in the world with you, as the charter captain. All our programs are open to non-members, but not at the member discount.

" Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream."

    LESSONS / BOAT USE

BICS offers a comprehensive program of sailing lessons with US Sailing Certified Keelboat Instructors with the goal of building the sailing knowledge, proficiency, and confidence needed for our students to get checked out in our boats so they can take their friends and family sailing without an instructor onboard.

BICS offers the US Sailing “Basic Keelboat”, “Basic Cruising”,” Bareboat Cruising”, and “Coastal Navigation” Courses in larger boats (not dinghys) specifically to each of our student’s sailing ability with inexpensive group lessons for beginner and intermediate sailors, and private lessons for any level of experience.

Our students who complete the Basic Cruising, and Bareboat Cruising courses are eligible to apply to US Sailing for their International Proficiency Certificate which is their passport to chartering a sailing vessel without a professional captain and crew almost anywhere in the world.

For Sailing Lessons or boat use we will have our 2023 Sailing Lesson Schedule and Rate Sheets online in April 2023 where you can book basic keelboat or bareback cruising courses at the links below.

    DONATIONS

There are great reasons to donate to Block Island Community Sailing including:

    • BICS is a true Community Benefit Program founded to make the sport of sailing available and affordable to Island residents and visitors who would not otherwise get to experience the joy and excitement of the sport.
    • BICS is committed to engage the Island youth sailors with affordable programs which will allow our youth to embrace the sport and also get to experience their heritage as residents of an Island who relied on sailing for transportation and commerce for hundreds of years.
    • BICS works with other organizations, such as the Town of New Shoreham Recreation Department to offer special sailing programs to Camp Mohegan students and we also have special programs for Women, Seniors, and other groups as part of our community benefit mission.
